The boundaries of Business History, as a discipline, are constantly revisited. There have been contradictory views on the nature of our field for many decades, and they still exist today, reformulated by new generations and interest groups. As if these differences were not enough, there are also substantial disparities on when and how the subject has evolved worldwide. The discipline has expanded to new geographies recently, and several signals point to a more multicultural business history setting. However, some critical aspects still need to be addressed. How can we reinterpret and overcome the perpetuation of some hierarchies in our field? What are possible key insights from embracing an even more inclusive, global, and pluralistic vision of business history? My proposition is that these issues can be reinvigorated as part of a broader epistemological debate on humanistic and social sciences. This brief article considers possible alternatives for embracing even more diversity and complexity in our field from a Latin American perspective.

Argentina dominó el mercado mundial de carnes desde inicios del siglo XX, y los frigoríficos representaron una de las principales industrias radicadas en Argentina. Este artículo se propone revisitar un tema clásico dentro de la historiografía económica argentina desde una nueva perspectiva, al enfocarse en los actores empresariales e insertar este análisis en un proceso de cambio de la industria de la carne a escala global. La investigación propone una periodización distinta e ilustra las importantes transformaciones (en términos de actores, estrategias y perfiles productivos) que vivió la industria de la carne desde fines del siglo XIX hasta finales de los años veinte. Se analiza también cómo el sector se destacó por una temprana y fuerte concentración y por la competencia oligopólica entre las principales empresas, caracterizada por largos periodos de cooperación y breves enfrentamientos por las cuotas de exportación.

This paper attempts to analyze the Argentinian official policies for the settlement of the indigenous survivors after 1879-1885 military campaigns, and the results of such policies, focusing in the study of the genesis, organization and development of the pastoral colony Emilio Mitre in La Pampa Territory, during the first decades of its existence. ; Este artículo analiza la política oficial argentina para la radicación de los pueblos indígenas sobrevivientes a la campaña militar (1879-1885) y sus resultados a partir del estudio de la génesis, organización y desarrollo, durante las primeras décadas de su existencia, de la colonia pastoril Emilio Mitre donde se procedió a "reubicar" a una parte de la comunidad ranquelina en el entonces Territorio de La Pampa.

La investigación sobre redes de directorios se ha llevado a cabo principalmente en los Estados Unidos y los países europeos. Escasos son los trabajos de investigación, ya sea de la naturaleza teórica o empírica, que han estudiado las características y los factores que afectan a esta importante red inter empresarial en economías periféricas y turbulentas. En este estudio comparativo e histórico, nos centramos en el efecto de la turbulencia política y económica y la composición de la propiedad de las empresas más importantes en la configuración de la estructura de las redes de directorios en Argentina y Chile a finales de los años sesenta. Las principales conclusiones de este análisis son las siguientes: 1) las redes de directorio son mas fragmentadas en Argentina que en Chile, 2) la mayoría de los actores mas relevantes en la red argentina son empresas de sectores considerados estratégicos por el gobierno, 3) las filiales de multinacionales ocupan una posición central en Argentina, y 4) los bancos y las empresas de propiedad de grupos de negocios locales jugaron un papel central en la red de directorios chilena. Este estudio muestra cómo los factores institucionales y económicos afectan la estructura de relaciones entre empresas. ; Research on interlocking directorates has been conducted primarily in the United States and European countries. Little work of either theoretical or empirical nature has been done to study the characteristics and the factors that affect this important business network in peripheral and turbulent economies. In this comparative and historical study, we focus on the effect of the political and economic turbulence and the ownership composition of the largest firms on shaping the structure of interlocking directorates in Argentina and Chile by the end of the sixties. Four main findings result from this analysis: 1) the interlocking directorate in Argentina is more fragmented than in Chile; 2) most relevant actors in the directorship interlock in Argentina are firms in industries considered strategic by the government; 3) multinational subsidiaries occupy a central position in Argentina; 4) banks and firms owned by local business groups played a central role in the interlocking directorates in Chile. Abstract
This article analyses the structure and changes of large companies based on a new database of the 200 largest non-financial firms operating from 1913 to 1971 in Argentina. The main contribution of the research consists of the elaboration of the rankings of the 200 largest companies according to their paid-up capital between 1913 and 1971 and the construction of a database of large companies based on homogeneous sources and criteria. The study identifies the long-lasting presence of family-based diversified business groups and foreign multinationals from the first global period to the end of Import Substitution Industrialisation. It also shows that the presence of foreign companies among the 200 largest firms is higher than that identified in other countries. The study constitutes the first comprehensive research into big business in Argentina until the 1970s and a first attempt to identify the life cycles of the largest companies in Argentina.
